COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Not Just for Christmas Anymore submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2020, 9:38pm This compilation’s title is a bit of a misnomer, as many of these compositions are famous well beyond any associations they may share (or have once shared) with the holiday season, but it nonetheless does offer a strong selection of Baroque classics played ably by talented ensembles. The editors do rely awfully heavily on stalwarts Bach and Handel, who comprise over half of the tracks between them, but the selections emphasize musical variety (even within the era’s strictures). Aside from “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”, a movement from Handel’s “Messiah”, and “Joy to the World” (and possibly Vivaldi’s “Winter”), these songs don’t particularly evoke Christmas to modern ears, but the compilation is a fairly good representation of the Baroque period; it just suffers from the gap between the expectations bestowed by its title and its actual contents.
