COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Bollywood Meets Reality submitted by michrigan on May 16, 2007, 9:55pm "Wow! What a movie!"
That was the reaction of one of a number of reviewers of this movie on Amazon. It was my reaction exactly, the moment the movie ended. It was Bollywood at its best. Not only were there the usual dance scenes with incredibly beautiful costumes, but there was a stark realism always there, whether in the background or at the cemter of the plot. They don't make movies like this in America. There was no profanity, not even a kiss, and any violence was appropriate to the subject of the partition of India that resulted in Pakistan in the aftermath of World War II.
The heroine, played by incredibly beautiful Urmila Matandkar, is a Hindu engaged to be married. On the night before her she is kidnapped by a Moslem and eventually forced to marry him because the harsh morality of the country and the submission of women caused her rejection by her family. As if she is responsible for her own abduction.
The individual characters all get caught up in the historical drama dominated by religious and political conflict and violence. Families are at the focus of the drama because they are split apart and make every effort even to death to reunite. And that is the source of the brilliantly believable and realistic yet heartrending ending in which all the characters realize the sacrifices they must make. Yet no one is spared the heartbreak of a broken past and uncertain future. The tears are shed, but they are most genuine tears and the viewer cannot help but share them inside if not out.
