COMMUNITY REVIEWS
The Gershwins via Sunny 60s California Pop submitted by Meginator on August 21, 2021, 9:19am Before listening to this album, I never knew that I wondered what the music of George and Ira Gershwin would sound like if performed by the Beach Boys, but now that I’ve heard it I’m wondering what other unlikely musicians the immensely talented Brian Wilson could successfully transform into sunlit 1960s surf-pop. Wilson’s ability to capture the jazzy feeling of these songs as originally composed while remaining true to his own distinct style is almost uncanny, and the overall effect is equal parts bemusing and enchanting. I’m not sure what I expected from this album, but “Gershwin as Beach Boys” is probably what I should have expected and definitely what I got. This won’t suit everyone, but it’s fascinating to hear the marriage of two genres here, as only Brian Wilson could mash them together.
