On one level, Brendan James is another in a long line of pop singer-songwriters with a piano and an axe to grind about love, but his songs are unusually honest and feel surprisingly personal in a genre occasionally bereft of convincing emotion. James is unquestionably a gifted songwriter, and his focus on the piano gives his music a sense of depth that makes the lyrics resonate deeply. This album finds him taking on a range of moods, and he handles everything from cheerful optimism to wistful ballads with grace, making each track sound good and giving the album a sense of purpose and a nice well-rounded feeling. This is a hidden gem.
