Told through the eyes of Alexander and his sister Fanny, we see the exuberant and colorful Ekdahl household in a Swedish town early in the twentieth century. Their parents, Oscar and Emilie, are the director and the leading lady of the local theatre company. Oscar's mother and brother are its chief patrons. After Oscar's early death, his widow marries the bishop and moves with her children to his austere and forbidding chancery. The children are immediately miserable, but befriend a local Jewish merchant whose odd household becomes the children's refuge.
DVD, region 1, widescreen (1.66:1) presentation; Dolby Digital mono, RDSL dual-layer.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I can't believe nobody has reviewed this GREAT movie! submitted by Tassos on December 26, 2018, 1:39pm I am a big fan of Ingmar Bergman, the Late Great. THis was an excellent, if too long, movie of his. My all time favorite, UNCONDITIONALLY RECOMMENDED, is his 1950s movie WILD STRAWBERRIES.

This film has great characters, and is of epic scope. submitted by lisa on August 1, 2019, 1:21pm The scariest shot I've ever seen is in this film. Alexander's in the spooky old-stuff shop, and a figure appears behind him.

But there are also farts being lit, and the string of curses that comes out of Alexander's mouth as he walks out of the church. So much LIFE is this film.
