Pretty Standard, Lots of Potential submitted by Meginator on June 29, 2019, 9:40am From the album’s first few tracks, it sounds like the Newsboys are heading in an exciting new direction with their revamped lineup, but they quickly settle into a relatively standard Christian praise-pop vibe that sounds like so much of the rest of mainstream Christian radio these days. Michael Tait ably handles the band’s relentlessly earnest lyrics, which get the job done but lack the cleverness and self-aware humor that characterizes the best songs of the James and Furler days. The two standout tracks are a cover of “Jesus Freak” that gives it a slightly harder edge than the original version and the surprising “Miracles”, which takes some of its cues from industrial music (of all things). The latter track is excellent in isolation, even if it has little musical relation to the rest of the album, and shows that this lineup has a lot of potential if they release themselves from listeners' (or perhaps even their own) expectations. This edition includes some remixes of varying quality, and the whole package is fine even though the lasting impression I got is that these Newsboys are capable of so much more.
