COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Intriguing Orchestration submitted by Meginator on August 12, 2020, 6:11pm This album offers an unfamiliar take on some of George Gershwin’s iconic compositions, using older orchestrations to recreate what they may have sounded like in their original incarnations. The piano stands out for its clarity, and the whole recording encapsulates the playful spirit that lies at the core of Gershwin’s best works. The use of banjo on some of the musical theater selections lends them a unique quality, both within the context of this album and as compared to other recordings, and the balance between the instruments is nicely tuned on each track. A modern recording of Yankee Doodle on an Edison Phonograph is somewhat strange and feels out of place, but it does set the mood and offer a point of comparison alongside the clearer modern recording equipment. It may be impossible now to recreate the original Gershwin sound, but this album is an interesting effort and provides a neat way for listeners to hear and appreciate different nuances in his songs.
