Clapton Has Never Been Better Than Right Here
submitted by John J. Madonna on January 12, 2008, 1:39pm
Coming out of the All Things Must Pass session for George Harrison, Clapton and some of Delaney and Bonnie's band got together and recorded this collection of originals and standards (as well as Hendrix's Little Wing, which wasn't a standard then, but is still really good) and made maybe the best record to come out of England's blues-rock scene. Clapton's guitar playing has always been at its best when challenged, and truly what better challenge is there than trying to outdo guest musician Duane Allman?
The songs here are unimpeachable, Clapton's singing is a real highlight here (he's not really known for his vocals,) the band is tight and having fun, and the running theme of love and anguish just tears at the old heartstrings. Everyone knows "Layla," but truly every song here is a gem.
