COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Should Have Stayed At The Bus Station submitted by jaegerla on March 7, 2011, 10:18am Kevin Smith listed this as the most influential movie on his own film-making career, and the similarities between the Austinites and Smith’s New Jersyers are striking. Each group consists of 20-30 somethings, all within the same city, all loosely connected. Each of the characters are extremely knowledgeable, even if their expertise is limited to Kennedy’s assassination or the Star Wars trilogy. These characters are happy to share their insights with their friends, acquaintances, and anonymous passersby. Each group is also blissfully unaware of how little interest other people have in their knowledgebase yet they share it relentlessly. But aside from a creating a cast of eccentrics, Linklater and Smith go opposite directions with their storylines. Smith delves into slapstick while Linklater’s film doesn’t come out and tell you when to laugh or when the movie is making a real point. It is up to you to figure out what these people are all about. It’s almost impossible not to like this movie.
