Atmospheric Psychological Horror submitted by Meginator on July 28, 2018, 12:18pm This is a moody film that drips creepy atmosphere and dread, relying (successfully) on the unstated to provide tension and evoke a sense of discomfort and fear in both the characters and the viewer. The story winds gently through its paces, gradually unfolding in a captivating way that almost casts the viewer as a participant, wondering whether the events on screen have actually occurred or are the figments of one character's imagination. That uncertainty lends the film its power, and it captures the unsteady elements of Shirley Jackson's novel unexpectedly well in a medium that is, perhaps, less suited to this kind of subtlety.
