"From acclaimed director Samuel Fuller (The Big Red One) comes a compelling murder mystery set in the Little Tokyo section of Los Angeles. An exotic dancer is shot in cold blood, and detectives Charlie Bancroft (Glenn Corbett, Shenandoah) and Joe Kojaku (James Shigeta, Die Hard) are put on the case. A very good noir with an all too rare leading man submitted by Will O on August 26, 2020, 9:30am The Crimson Kimono (1959)

AlfredAngier’s review published on Letterboxd:
James Shigeta would have been a much bigger star in a better world. His charm was incredible and he brought a real depth to his character who served his country but doesn't always feel at home.
The camera work was incredibly good especially at the beginning with lots of movement and action happening within the frame that prevented the need for excessive cuts and edits.
The story itself took a backseat to the relationships and tensions which is a shame because I think if the story had been a little better woven into the best friends falling for the same woman storyline it would have been an excellent movie instead of just good/ahead of its time.
Still, it's a really solid noir with an Asian-American lead that is almost just as rare today as in 1959 when it was made and the fact that it went out of its way to avoid stereotypes is sadly very surprising and uncommon in cinema in general.
Also, Victoria Shaw is a vision.
