A Dreary Mood Effectively Delivered submitted by Meginator on July 15, 2020, 9:07pm This album is a characteristically dreary effort that fits right in with the rest of Eels’ discography, relying heavily on gravelly vocals to deliver melancholy lyrics about being unlucky in life and (especially) in love. Some of the tracks hit on nice, memorable licks in the verses and/or choruses, but the album’s overall effect is fairly consistent. The lyrics are thoughtful, if a bit self-effacing, and everything about the vocals and instrumentals revolves around setting a particular mood to suit them. It isn’t always pleasant, but it’s intelligently and thoughtfully made and successful in evoking a feeling of not-quite-despair.
