Big Hits, Big Misses

For a band that has created some of the most beautiful and enduring pop songs in history, they just couldn't seem to put together a great album. Is that a knock on them, considering there are maybe a dozen artists in history that could release music for over two decades, with more than one truly masterful opus? Maybe it's setting the bar a little high.
My problem with Lola, like Village Green and Arthur, is that the bad songs are not near-misses or filler. They're terrible. They have soapbox agendas and sour melodies. Top of the Pops and Moneyground lack the humor to sell themselves and they come off as whiny rants, whereas Apeman, also a commentary song, is funny yet poignant.
Strangers, Lola, This Time Tomorrow, Powerman, all are gorgeous, amazing pop tunes. But I'd rather listen to them on a compilation of my favorite Kinks songs than have to listen to or skip over the gaps.
