COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Young and Innocent Days submitted by Caser on February 22, 2011, 12:55pm Why do I want to listen to a 1969 anti-war, Britain as warmonger concept album? I don't, really. Impressively, the songs on the Kinks' Arthur are so good that you can actually enjoy them without feeling like you're taking a side or marching in a protest. Or, you could enjoy it for the story of Arthur, since, unlike Bowie's Ziggy Stardust story, this one actually plays out throughout the entire record.

Victoria's tempo-shifting, mood swinging riff and stabbing horns start things off by laying out the landscape (England + settlements) and the soundscape (pop chorus, frenetic verse melodies, bouncy guitar), for the rest of the album. As a deeper cut, "Young and Innocent Days" rounds things out with one of the Kinks' most gorgeous melodies and moving vocal deliveries anywhere in their deep body of work.

Give it a few tries and you'll find a reason to like this one.
