It is the summer of 1869, and trains, crews, and families are traveling together, riding America's brand new transcontinental railroad. The pages come alive with the details of the trip and the sounds, speed, and strength of the mighty locomotives; the work that keeps them moving; and the thrill of travel from plains to mountain to ocean. Come hear the hiss of the steam, feel the heat of the engine, watch the landscape race by. Come ride the rails, come cross the young country!

Informative Adaptation submitted by Meginator on August 25, 2019, 12:57pm This is a vibrant version of Brian Floca’s excellent picture book that brings the text and images to life. Eric G. Dove’s narration is dynamic and clear and the static illustrations are supplemented with background noises and occasional bursts of simple (yet effective) motion effects. The story effectively conveys rich details about transcontinental railroad travel circa the 1870s, from the labor required to build the lines and run the engines to the passengers’ experiences and the shifting landscapes between Omaha and Sacramento. Though Floca attempts to present a well-rounded view of the railroad and its effects, the story does gloss over and/or omit discussions of race and class that are essential to understanding the historical context; these are left to the bonus features. Overall, the film is a very nice, accessible production that pinpoints a transformative moment in U.S. history with a lot of rich context and a perfect balance of story and just-the-facts information.
