The Mists of Avalon
submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on June 21, 2022, 3:07pm
Based on the novel of the same name by Marion Zimmer Bradley, "The Mists of Avalon" tells the Arthurian legends from the perspective of women, particularly King Arthur's half-sister Morgaine (Morgan le Fey). Much of the plot centers on Morgaine's education to become and then status as a Pagan Priestess who leaves Avalon in a fight with the Lady of the Lake (leader of the Avalon priestesses). Much of the plot and imagery features the role of Pagan spirituality in the characters' lives, the fight between Paganism and Christianity for dominance in the kingdom, and parent-child or parental figure-child relationships.
The book and film include numerous plot elements that did not exist in the original Celtic stories, namely Lancelot (a medieval French addition to the stories), his relationship with Queen Guinevere, and Morgaine giving birth to Arthur's child.
The film necessarily abridges much of the novel's plot, imagery and character development. The novel, of course, is better in many ways, particularly for the imagery of spiritual mysticism.
