COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Slow and Thoughtful submitted by Meginator on August 22, 2017, 9:09pm This film is a deliberately slow-paced, philosophical sort of production. If you expect that going in, it's possible to get a lot out of the experience, from the characters' philosophical conversations to the long takes employing slow zooming. It's the kind of film you can sit with for a while.

stalker submitted by leenajong on August 30, 2017, 2:15pm Not bad... pace is slowwww though.

One of my favorite films ever submitted by lianars on June 27, 2022, 5:24pm I watched this movie several years ago and still think about it maybe once a month. Stalker incorporates long, wordless, dreamlike scenes into dense symbolic and philosophical treatises to allow the viewer to process what's going on in the film and their own lives in real time. And you'll have plenty, it's three hours long.
Also of note: this film has one of the highest in-real-life body counts in recent memory - Tarkovsky and two other actors passed away due to cancer from filming this movie near in a busted hydroelectric station.

Roadside Picnic submitted by tarascon on June 22, 2023, 9:46am Not to come off like a pedant (too late!), but my review title refers to the Strugatsky brothers’ book that the film is “based” on; check it out but expect something quite different.

This is also one of my favorite films…

I will defer to Tartovsky’s own words:
If the regular length of a shot is increased, one becomes bored, but if you keep on making it longer, it piques your interest, and if you make it even longer, a new quality emerges, a special intensity of attention.

Indeed.
Sadly, in this era of attention deficit many folks will never be capable of sticking around long enough to witness, and wonder at, the ever-present process of eternity—much less sit through some really wonderful films…
(On a related note, ADD is why most people never notice the lurking zombie until it’s too late)
