COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Beauty Pageant Mockumentary- Plus Murder! submitted by Meginator on June 22, 2018, 6:01pm This is a fairly strong film that is still funny and effective today, despite some jokes that are definitely cringe-worthy (and occasionally downright offensive) by modern standards. The cast is fantastic and you can tell they’re having fun with the mockumentary format, which allows for some absolutely hilarious deadpan performances that are funnier than many of the actual jokes. The main plot arcs are almost entirely predictable, but the film is a lot of fun if you can overlook some of its outdated sensibilities and sharper barbs.

Poor Man's Christopher Guest submitted by shira.pilarski on July 25, 2020, 12:38am A fun, silly mockumentary, directed by "The State" alumnus Jann, in the Guest vein; sort of like if Waiting for Guffman were propelled by a teen beauty pageant. All actors give their best Minnes-OH-ta accents in this film, which is simultaneously light AND a murder mystery. Kirstie Alley is hilarious as a deranged pageant mom, and Allison Janney is well cast, but much of the humor in this movie falls a little flat (although this may be a contemporary problem, since the mockumentary style was a bit less played out in 1999). Funnyman Will Sasso's character is, unfortunately, just a joke at the expense of intellectually disabled people.

Predictable but still funny submitted by bookher on August 21, 2023, 4:56pm This is an oldie but still funny. Some of the lines and scenes are quite out of step with the times but still a fun movie to watch.
