COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Exploring Gender Identity submitted by Meginator on July 9, 2017, 9:12pm I think that this documentary does a very good job of presenting ideas about gender nonconformity to a mainstream audience in a respectful and accessible way. The language is clear and the script addresses potential areas of confusion and discomfort for the audience, while the interviews are respectful toward the interviewees' preferences and identities; Katie Couric clearly has some moments where she doesn't know things, but she recognizes this and actually appears to listen to (and learn from!) the people she is talking to. Importantly, the documentary includes interviews with people of many different gender identities and experiences, although most of the interviewed individuals who identify as transgender are MTF. It is possible to point to some minor misconceptions and areas where greater clarity would be beneficial, but this is a good entry point for people who are interested in learning more about these issues.

Interesting Film submitted by Beth Manuel on July 17, 2017, 12:48pm I learned a lot from this film, despite thinking that, going into it, I wouldn't see or hear anything new. There were poignant interviews and some basic information that Katie Couric didn't know, but she gracefully takes in this new knowledge. I hope that people who have never (or are unaware that they have) encountered a transperson are able to see this documentary and learn from it, too. It really humanizes the transgendered people portrayed-as it should.

Much needed documentary submitted by mmckenzie on August 26, 2017, 10:37am Katie Couric does a great job with this sensitive topic. Much needed info!

Enlightening submitted by Suzanne Muenz on August 29, 2017, 4:45pm This documentary really helped me to understand some of the complexities of this subject. It was well done.
