Excellent Dramatic Tension submitted by Meginator on August 31, 2019, 9:09pm This film hinges on the gradual tension it builds as viewers and characters alike come to wonder whether all is as it seems, and it left me guessing right up until the moment that the truth was revealed. Fundamentally an espionage story set during World War II, the plot is full of misdirection, conflicting evidence, and deep character development that makes its (inevitably) tragic conclusion emotionally devastating. Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are spectacular in the lead roles, their performances full of the type of believable psychological nuances that are required to really drive the story’s ambiguity. The film is somewhat violent, as is to be expected, but it never felt too over-the-top, with most of the fighting intended to establish and raise the stakes as the plot progresses. Just when you think you’ve seen every take on a familiar trope, a film like this comes along and offers a new twist on the same old tale. Overall, I thought it was really well done, and certainly unexpected.
