A Stunning Cinematic Experience submitted by Meginator on August 23, 2020, 10:37am First things first: when talking about this film, I feel that it is necessary to point out that the creative team behind it is largely made up of white men, though the special features make it clear that they did consult people of Japanese heritage when making the film. Given that the film relies heavily on influences from Japanese folklore and visual culture, this feels a little off to me, although the film itself is a wonderful work of art, seems to me (a white person) to be respectful of the culture it draws from, and allows a global audience to experience this type of storytelling.

That said, Kubo and the Two Strings is absolutely stunning. The visuals are incredibly fluid, both by the standards of stop-motion animation and with regard to the integration of computer-generated visuals; it can be difficult to tell practical and digital effects apart at times, and every frame is utterly captivating in its rich detail. From the backgrounds to the costumes to the music (which is incredibly important as a story element), the filmmakers revel in a richly immersive environment. As for the story itself, it is emotionally powerful and will resonate with a variety of viewers, though its nuances may be lost on younger viewers, who may also be frightened by some of the antagonists. This film beautifully blends hope and sadness, addressing mental decline and deep grief with a surprisingly delicate touch and in ways that don’t often show up in this type of mass-market cinema. Altogether, this film is an incredible achievement and a powerful emotional experience.
