The mainstreaming of outsider music submitted by answer-beat on June 26, 2023, 9:20pm Unlike most people who have seen (or will see) this movie, I was well aware of Florence Foster Jenkins' music and story for decades before I watched this, and was honestly very surprised Hollywood decided to make a major motion picture about the semi-obscure figure. WFMU DJ Irwin Chusid devoted a chapter to Jenkins in his outsider music tome Songs In The Key Of Z, and even before that book came out I'd already been familiar with her music from hearing it on WPKN, a non-commercial radio station in CT where I grew up, and ended up hosting a show at for ten years. So most people already aware of Jenkins are either classical/opera aficionados or people who collect Shaggs records and watch cult B-movies. And a lot of people who aren't aware of Jenkins' story who watch this movie probably can't get past the bad singing. I honestly thought this was a really good mainstream Hollywood adaptation of the story, even if it's probably not totally accurate (no biopics are), and it also works as a satire on the over-privileged elite. We have recordings of Jenkins' music here at the library, and Streep's performance is clearly faithful to those recordings.
