COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Good submitted by DL on June 21, 2017, 1:47pm The Star Trek crew deliver a great movie. Love Kirk, Spock, Scotty and the doctor.

Star Trek Beyond submitted by SBNB on August 17, 2018, 2:03pm This Star Trek movie was pretty good. I was glad to see another one made.

Great Star Trek movie! submitted by Xris on August 29, 2018, 7:53am I love the action in this one! And that they get separated and have to help/find each other again.

Warning: spoilers ahead submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 16, 2019, 3:31pm For "Star Trek" fans this will be worth watching "Beyond". It has some fascinating plot twists and impressive special effects.
For those hoping that "Star Trek" will portray a future in which people are less prejudiced/bigoted/limited by social stratification, the movie disappoints. It fails the Bechdel test* and has only a few impressive, tough female characters who are pivotal to the plot and not simply there fore decoration. There is no extraneous nudity in this movie as there was in the previous ones in this series. However, "Beyond" includes a hint that stalking one's ex-girlfriend is acceptable, even a good idea or, at worst, something of a joke. There are very few people of color in the movie and one of them is the villain. LGBT fans were promised that in this movie Sulu would be gay and he is... sort of. In one scene, for a few seconds, we see Sulu wearing a wedding ring and we see the picture of his daughter that he keeps at his work station. When his family visits him at the outpost, Sulu showers his daughter with affection but only side-hugs his husband. They don't even kiss. At that rate, one could easily mistake the husband for a brother or some other friend or relative. Ironically, George Takei, who played Sulu in the original "Star Trek" TV series and movies is openly gay and married to a man. Actor Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in these new movies, is openly gay but his character is straight.
*Named for cartoonist Alison Bechdel, the test is whether two named (non anonymous) female characters have a conversation that is NOT about a male character. Failing the test shows that the movie does not adequately present women, their perspectives, agency and importance.

Star Trek submitted by Clown81 on August 21, 2019, 9:23pm I like Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.

Kind of a weird story and plot twist... submitted by tbbrown76 on July 6, 2020, 8:49pm They don't need to save a planet or galaxy this time but a space port. Some interesting characters, but firing up a spaceship after 200 years? I guess Scotty is a miracle maker. Only recommended for fans.
