Xylophone Rags submitted by Meginator on August 24, 2020, 10:43pm Recorded as a single performance, this album showcases Bob Becker’s mind-boggling xylophone virtuosity and makes a strong argument for the xylophone as a quintessential ragtime instrument. Though the notes often fly by at a breakneck pace, each one feels deliberate, working in service of the melody and contributing to the genre’s signature blend of control and freedom. The warm hum of the marimba accompaniments makes for a pleasant accompaniment, and the drumset adds to a general sense of playfulness by occasionally incorporating unusual instrumentation, such as a duck call with surprising range, into the rhythmic background. The overall effect is utterly delightful throughout, even as many tracks bear significant similarities, and the ensemble’s talent and delight in the music makes for an irresistible experience.
