Just Okay Without Dramatic Context submitted by Meginator on June 23, 2023, 11:41pm Listening to this without being familiar with the full context from the show is a little strange and creates some emotional distance from the music. The cast’s renditions of “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Dancing with Myself” are the only particularly memorable tracks, as most don’t do anything to make the originals come alive or feel unique beyond (presumably) relating to the characters’ personal lives in highly specific ways. This is more karaoke than covers, with slick production prevening the (talented) cast from adding too much in the way of convincing emotion; I can understand the desire for mass appeal, but given the show’s tendency toward theatrics, these anodyne renditions of famous songs seem ill-conceived and out of place. This isn’t horrible, but it’s kind of boring, and I don’t recommend it for anyone who isn’t already watching the show.
