In 1971, Stanford University professor Dr. Philip Zimbardo cast twenty-four male student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail to examine the source of abusive behavior in the prison system. The results astonished the world, as participants went from middle-class undergrads to drunk-with-power sadists and submissive victims in just a few days. Based on a true story.

Scary! submitted by dave_472 on July 18, 2020, 11:14am This was a great film, scary how people can act under circumstances, even when it was originally an "experiment!"

Disturbing in a good way submitted by margie222 on June 26, 2023, 1:38pm I enjoyed this movie. It does a lot to contextualize and illustrate the unethical nature of the Stanford prison experiment from the participants' point of view. For example, when I learned about the study in my psychology class, I couldn't understand why the students went crazy so fast- but the movie made it much more understandable as to why Prisoner 8612 broke down on day 2. The cast is full of surprisingly recognizable actors, too. It's not a perfect film, but it's interesting and makes you look at the experiment in a darker way. 7/10.
