Originally produced as a motion picture in 2015.
Widescreen.
Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Tom Holland, Jordi Molla, Charlotte Riley, Joseph Mawle, Michelle Fairley.
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville₂s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. This story reveals the encounter₂s harrowing aftermath, as the ship₂s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive.
Blu-ray, widescreen; requires Blu-ray player.

Good movie submitted by VmT on August 3, 2016, 10:34am I really enjoyed this movie. It was a perfect blend of drama and adventure, with a good storyline and character development.

Should have been better submitted by Will O on August 29, 2020, 3:12pm I'm kind of with the whales on this one.
Honestly this movie is... fine. Not bad enough to hate but not nearly as good as the cast and story should make it.
The first hour is a slog, the POV character Thomas Nickerson (played by Brendan Gleeson as an older man and Tom Holland as a young man) is relating his story except he's telling the story of Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), not his own story. Kind of baffling why they did that from a storytelling perspective especially because there are maybe 2 scenes with Chase's wife and then he's gone and we don't see her again until the end.
The camera work is way to loose and there are so many cuts that I never know what to focus on.
The CGI is distracting because the town and ocean look fake and it looks like they shot in giant tanks and then slapped some effects on to make it look like the open sea.
The jargon sounds like they just want to show off that they learned it but they never explain what anything means.
Once they get attacked by the whale and are shipwrecked it gets compelling but that's around halfway through and they only establish about 5-6 of the crew so I don't know or care about most of the people who are dying.
It's a disappointing film given the subject matter and the cast, it should have been a lot better but Ron Howard seems to have a talent for making surefire successes boring and disappointing.
