A Foundational Blues Experience submitted by Meginator on August 11, 2021, 5:00pm Bessie Smith is undoubtedly one of the top blues singers of all time, and it would be nice to hear clearer, remastered versions of these tracks, which too often betray the technological imperfections of their time. Yet the cracks and pops do contribute to a general mood that suits the music, which itself consists mostly of Smith’s expressive vocals over simple piano accompaniments. Smith shines through, the focus almost entirely on her clear tone as she sings about important issues, the stories in these songs compelling and (sometimes sadly) relevant even today. This is great music, full stop.
