Originally released in Sweden as "Du levande" in 2007.
Jessika Lundberg, Elisabet Helander, Bjorn Englund.
Hypnotic and darkly humorous, Roy Andersson's You, the living is a uniquely Scandinavian take on the absurdities of life. Expertly shot and whimsically written, You, the living traces a series of bizarre, deadpan and comic vignettes which wryly address the meaning (or lack thereof) of life. Visually striking, strangely hilarious, utterly surreal and fantastical in its execution, You, the living is sure to be an instant cult classic.
DVD, widescreen.

Swedish Modern submitted by nbauer on May 28, 2010, 3:25pm The main description for this pretty much nails it. Don't be expecting a Swedish version of Monty Python, which seems to be how the marketers are trying to sell it (down to the Meaning of Life knock-off poster/DVD cover). Instead, know that you'll either get sucked into this absurd, beautifully shot world immediately - unless of course you just don't get it. The movie weaves a bunch of seemingly disconnected stories together very loosely, with the austere sets and long takes serving as unifying elements. You don't really notice that the characters' lives are unfolding, but by the end I was surprised at how invested I was in all of them. It's a quiet and very subtle movie; give it your full attention. You'll be glad you did.

Yes submitted by jibkidder on July 25, 2022, 11:07am Between him and Ostlund, my interest in Swedish cinema has been piqued. A great complement to his recent films is the documentary on him, "Being a Human Person", where his unique filming methods are explained and depicted. It seems that the Swedish neutrality position during WWII and his own alcoholism, a habit which, in the film, he attempts and fails to kick, are the strongest influences to his singular work.
