Bright Movie submitted by SarahRose on February 22, 2010, 6:59pm Bright Star is a beautiful mix of sun dappled English summer and dark Regency interiors. Likewise, the sweetness and melodramatics of Fanny and John's love are offset by the darkness of Tom Keat's illness and the bitterness of Charles Brown, John's Hampstead Village host who is jealous of his time and affection and aggressive towards Fanny. Although the romance between the leads feels a bit diluted, the movie looks like a Romantic poem distilled into images. It is the perfect backdrop to listen to Keat's words.

Chick Flick Antidote submitted by nbauer on May 28, 2010, 3:00pm There are mushy, expensive, gorgeous but snoozy costume dramas (Young Victoria, I'm lookin' at you) that are an excuse for art directors to show how well they can copy historical documents, and there a few rare movies like this one, where the period is one aspect of a beautifully executed production. A terrific movie that steers out of the dreaded biopic trap ("and then they did this, and then they did this") and delivers a good but not cloying love story. Abbie Cornish shines, even wearing what has to be some of the most unattractive silhouettes in fashion history. Somehow, even though there are all those damn bonnets in her movies, Jane Campion delivers absolutely stunning films consistently. A great way to get the taste of an insipid chick flick out of your mouth.

Brava to Bright Star submitted by erksnerks on July 8, 2011, 10:09am I can still see the images, remember the costumes, feel the feeling.
The ease that the characters move through the scenes, "for real characters, in real life poses and attitudes". History with feeling. Need more flicks like it or to just watch it again. Brava to Bright Star.

Two Thumbs Up submitted by Avliss on June 17, 2014, 8:17am This is one of the only romance movies that I love to watch. The cinematography and soundtrack are absolutely gorgeous, and Ben Wishaw does a fantastic job portraying one of the most renowned poets of the Romantic period. Abbie Cornish is another treasure in this film in her portrayal of Fanny Brawne.
