Super Solid Debut submitted by Meginator on July 8, 2023, 9:58pm This album may be a couple of decades old, but R.E.M. still has a unique style of pop rock that is unmistakably their own. Grounded by melodic basslines and solid drumming and guided by the Michael Stipe’s energetic vocal delivery, the songs immediately pull you in with their generally cheerful tone and catchy hooks. The music still has a bit of a raw sound to it given that this is the band’s debut album, but their songwriting abilities and their core style are firmly in place. R.E.M. is clearly a band who knew what they wanted to do straight from the beginning and it’s remarkable how easily and quickly they established themselves. If you enjoy R.E.M.’s later music, or solid pop rock in general, this is definitely worth a spin.
