COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Sentimental but Solid submitted by Meginator on June 24, 2017, 2:42pm Let's get this out of the way: "Collateral Beauty" is pretty saccharine and drips with sentiment. That, however, doesn't necessarily make it a terrible film. It tugs at the heartstrings rather obviously, yes, but as a film it generally worked for me. The all-star cast's performances are solid, and the movie elicits genuine emotional reactions despite holding few surprises. I figured out one big twist (about two characters' relationship) before its reveal, but still felt the full brunt of its impact. The big "twist" (of sorts) at the end is hardly surprising, and I doubt that it has the impact that the writers and/or director intended, but it does prompt you to view the film in a different way. It's difficult to make convincing movies about deeply troubled characters, and I admire the filmmakers and cast for tackling the subject(s) of grief and bereavement in such a forthright manner. Is this movie a classic? No, but neither does it deserve the negative press it's gotten, in my opinion. If you approach it on its own terms and don't expect too much in the way of novelty, "Collaborative Beauty" is a perfectly functional, if slightly over-ambitious, film.

Surprisingly touching submitted by mmckenzie on June 25, 2017, 1:11pm a hard topic to deal with, but powerfully done.

OK submitted by yenkong on July 27, 2017, 8:12pm This movie was fine, rather touching..

Tear jerker submitted by katieepage on August 11, 2017, 10:58pm Thought provoking. It was interesting to watch and discuss with my older teens about how Will Smith's coworkers went about trying to get what they desired/help him. I like the sappy movie and this fit the bill.

Some flaws, but overall a good movie submitted by heapah on August 13, 2017, 8:45pm Some flaws, but overall a good movie. A strong cast of actors too.

Excellent! submitted by LVDS on August 17, 2017, 7:05am One of the best movies I've seen in a while. The story of a man (Will Smith-superb acting) grieving over the death of his 6 year old daughter. Emotional depth, layers of stories and not always predictable outcomes. Both my husband and I thought very good.

Nice feel good movie submitted by bookher on August 22, 2017, 1:54pm Good movie on dealing with death and a sweet twist of plot at the end.

Good movie submitted by cmarie2004 on July 25, 2018, 9:20am Surprised at the end of the movie! I never saw it coming and this movie was full of intertwinings that made sense at the end. A teachable moment on how we all deal with grief in our own little way and sometimes we do need help from others. A tear jerker for me.

Not bad. You can watch it to the end. Preposterous script, important topic. submitted by Tassos on September 23, 2019, 8:15am Not bad. Unlike 9 in 10 POS Hollywood crappy movies, you can watch it to the end. Preposterous script, important topic.

Not good submitted by denisemw on September 14, 2020, 12:37am I wanted to like this movie. Supporting cast is great and well developed, but I thought the story line was bad and Will Smith's performance was very weak. The acting at the end by Will Smith was hard to watch and totally unbelievable. Felt more connection to the supporting characters; perhaps just miscasting of Will Smith. Not a sappy or emotional film for me, just a bad one. Wish they had used the budget for something else with a cast like this in a beautiful NYC setting.

I feel like I need to see it again to catch everything submitted by Xris on February 3, 2021, 12:41am Usually I don't get the deep meanings in movies, so either I'm getting better at it, or they're not hiding very well. Still, I loved the pairings of the people, very appropriate, and the ending still surprised me. (It's the reason I want to see it again.) Great movie about love, time, death, and life. Make sure to have some kleenex though.
