COMMUNITY REVIEWS

A Door to Joni submitted by Caser on April 18, 2010, 4:20pm If you have been snubbing Joni Mitchell albums for whatever preconceived notions about her and her music (like this writer had been until recently), I suggest you take some time with her gorgeously lyrical 1971 album, Blue. This is Joni at the height of her powers, this the record that burnt the topless towers of folkdom with its confessional stories of love, breakups, Paris, California, and that ever-shifting locale, home. The album sounds like a lyrics first, music second approach at first, but her ability to twist a phrase up in an unexpectedly blue melody will bring you back to this collection of stories for repeat listens. The pinnacle here is the pained story of a failed relationship where no one was at fault but everyone lost, "A Case of You," whose images of nights spent alone trying to figure out if a wreck of a relationship is worth salvaging opened the door to Joni for this listener, and now I'm here to stay.

Blue submitted by Varshini on July 7, 2019, 11:12pm My favorite was "A Case Of You".

Music to Surround Yourself With submitted by Meginator on August 27, 2022, 6:32pm This album of simple pop-folk tunes has a timeless quality to it. Joni Mitchell’s voice comes through clearly with every note and the simple accompaniments give the songs an honest, straightforward singer-songwriter vibe. The lyrics tackle universal themes about a range of emotion with a personal storytelling touch that makes them instantly memorable and relatable. The album is earnest but not cloying, and has rightfully claimed its place among the greatest of all time.

The musical backdrop of my young adult years submitted by Diananana on July 10, 2023, 11:02pm Joni Mitchell's voice is so amazing, both in quality and range. I never get tired of listening. I know every word of every song, but my favorite is Little Green. It's a bittersweet song written to the daughter Mitchell gave up for adoption in 1965.
