A Few Surprises Here and There submitted by Meginator on June 30, 2023, 11:11pm This album of classic Christmas songs and carols features Henry Mancini’s orchestral arrangements, complete with a full chorus. Although the songs generally have that classic 1960s holiday feel to them (which makes sense, given that they were apparently recorded circa 1966), some of the arrangements offer surprising harmonies and chordal structures, giving the familiar pieces an occasionally darker edge and making the album well worth listening to for a balance of familiarity and something very slightly unexpected. The track list is overly reliant on medleys, which prevents some of the individual carols from sticking out in any meaningful way, but this is still a great choice for anyone looking for a traditional take on the season’s popular songs.
