COMMUNITY REVIEWS

I'm not much for Joan Crawford in general, but ... submitted by lisa on July 30, 2019, 10:10am (a) she was a heck of a hard worker, and
(b) this film is marvelous.

At some point earlier in life I would have thought it exaggeratedly melodramatic and unrealistic. And perhaps it is. But it's not so unrealistic. It just highlights aspects of human nature that we don't so much want to be true, real, out there, --- in here.

Unwatchable, horrible movie. Not a classic. THe damned violins are much louder than the actor's voices. submitted by Tassos on May 4, 2021, 12:43pm THis unwatchable (in 2021) movie is not a classic, like Citizen Kane, which is ETERNAL. THis one is sheer torture to watch, with all the faults of movies back then, and none of their virtues.

THe musical score in itself makes the movie unwatchable. We expect 1940s movies to make extensive use of the damned violins, but this one takes it to the extreme, they are so bloody loud, they are louder than the dialogue!!

I hope the 2011 or so new version, which I should borrow soon, is at least watchable.
