I honestly think Disney movies are getting better. Gone are the princesses waiting for "true loves first kiss." Now we've got REAL heroines in their own stories.

Not what I expected submitted by mrajraspn08 on June 17, 2017, 11:34am I'm a huge Disney fan, but this one really didn't do it for me. The songs were catchy, but the lyrics were subpar, rhyming just to rhyme. I also can't see why this is praised for being a feminist movie--Moana doesn't actually do a whole lot. I will say that they did great dealing with Polynesian culture (as far as a non-Polynesian person can tell, anyway), and it's fine enough, but not something I would watch again.

Great movie! submitted by lgobrien on June 18, 2017, 5:41pm I watched this movie expecting a cliche Disney ending where the princess meets a man and they fall in love. No such plot can be found here. Moana is fiercely independent, possesses great leadership qualities, and longs for adventure. Even the soundtrack met (and exceeded) my expectations! I find myself singing the songs like a broken record, over and over again! Definitely worth watching!

Totally in love with it! submitted by ValerieL on July 3, 2017, 7:04pm I absolutely love this movie! I've already watched it about 8 times. The music is awesome and catchy. I find myself humming them throughout the day. I love the story line. It moves along at a steady pace. I love that Moana was brave enough to take a canoe, without really knowing how to sail, and sail into the huge ocean.

She faces all kinds of obstacles but manages to overcome them. At one point it looks like she's about to give up but she finds her determination and changes her mind, which I think is a great lesson for kids. It's okay to become discouraged as long as you find that determination in you and do not quit.

I don't know much about Polynesian culture, but as a non-Polynesian, I really enjoyed it!

Instant Classic submitted by Meginator on July 4, 2017, 7:35pm I love the direction that Disney is currently trending with its animated films, and "Moana" is absolutely excellent. The characters are instantly lovable and struggle with surprisingly deep existential crises in a realistic manner, and the actors bring them to life effectively and with ease. Disney often flirts around the edges of feminism, and I think this film comes closest to portraying a truly feminist heroine, an overdue and more than welcome development. The story doesn't tread much new ground, but it doesn't need to, and one particular wrinkle near the end provided a nice callback to the movie's earlier exploration of themes of identity and destiny. The animation is top quality work and the music, well...it exceeded my stratospheric expectations. I cannot speak to the movie's treatment of Polynesian culture(s), but from my perspective it seems like they did their best to remain respectful and to involve people from the depicted cultures in the making of the film. As a lifelong Disney fan, I was predisposed to like this movie, but even I was surprised by just how good it is. I think that "Moana" has the potential to be a classic for generations to come.

Strong female lead role in this AND she doesn't marry the guy(a demi-god) in the end. This is about "Island gods" & legends. It has scary parts that I wouldn't suggest for young(preschool) kids. Depending on your faith back ground, you may want to talk to your kids about God & creation. Good music.

I appreciate that Moana did not need a romantic subplot, that she was not only brave but also determined to keep trying in the face of many failures, and of course that she looks more like a real human girl than the stick figure exageratedly proportioned Disney women of the past.

Strong female follows her heart being called to the ocean to set things right in her village and for the world she sees changing because of Maui. The Rock Johnson does great with Maui and you grow to understand why he stole the heart. The music is the best part, way to go Lin-Manual Miranda!

I feel like at first my kids weren't so enthusiastic about it, then made their way to having a song crush on each song one at a time.
