A young mute woman and her child travel to New Zealand in the 1800s for an arranged marriage to a farmer. After the marriage she meets another man, and the competition for her love begins. Just one of the men realizes that her affections can only be won through her beloved piano.

Worthwhile movie submitted by brooksza on July 25, 2022, 3:59pm Boldly filmed and really strong chemistry between Anna Paquin (excellent child performance) and Holly Hunter. There's a moment in the third act that was so upsetting and made me yell 'holy F'.

I thought the end was fascinating. Interesting symbolism, foreshadowing and themes. Many types of communication, translation and bargaining. The piano score music was sometimes beautifully beautiful and sometimes hauntingly beautiful.

As with Power of the Dog, I rewatched the first few scenes again after finishing the movie and they're even more rewarding.
