Based on the novel by Jane Austen.
Originally produced as motion picture in 1996.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collette, Alan Cumming, Ewan McGregor, Jeremy Northam, Greta Scacchi, Juliet Stevenson, Polly Walker.
Emma Woodhouse is a young woman who, having engineered the marriage of her companion, turns her attention toward making a match for the local vicar and her new protegée, Harriet Smith. Her one voice of reason and restraint is Mr. Knightley, who has known her since she was a child and who watches her behaviour with wry amusement and sometimes with real anger. Emma presides over the small provincial world of Highbury with enthusiasm, but she will find it is all too easy to confuse good intentions with self-gratification.

Fun adaptation submitted by shpowers on July 19, 2014, 9:26am This is a lighthearted adaptation in keeping with Austen's playful irony.
Entertaining submitted by kathscot on July 20, 2014, 10:30am A well written version that doesn't drag.
Emma submitted by SBNB on July 29, 2014, 12:08pm I liked this adaptation of the book. I never thought the cover art fit very well, but the movie itself is fine.
Lovely submitted by majean on August 8, 2018, 8:34pm This was the first Austen film I saw in theaters. Loved it!
Appropriately silly submitted by kkjammers on July 31, 2020, 6:56pm Austen's novel comes to life with the help of fine actors such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northam, Toni Collette, Greta Scacchi, and Alan Cumming. Emma plays matchmaker for her friend Harriet, after success introducing her governess to her future husband. Although Harriet has strong feelings for a farmer, Emma is determined to marry her off to someone of higher station. Harriet follows Emma like a puppy dog...throughout most of the movie. Both Emma and Harriet show personal growth as the story concludes. A satisfying and amusing story/movie.
