What fun. submitted by lisa on July 25, 2019, 1:44pm Famously a remake with a woman cast in what had been a man's part.

Great Screwball Comedy submitted by Meginator on June 25, 2023, 12:39pm This fast-talking screwball comedy may take place in a world that has essentially disappeared (that of the pre-internet newsroom), but its nonstop patter and outstanding performances give it a timeless quality that makes it laugh-out-loud hilarious even today. The setup is standard enough, as an editor receives a final visit from his soon-to-be-remarried ex-wife, but the film quickly descends into madness and even farce as a breaking story develops and eventually breaks its way into the newspaper’s offices and the nearby judicial building. The plot elements are unlikely (to say the least), but just plausible enough to avoid taking viewers out of the story, even when the film breaks the fourth wall; somehow, it simply makes sense that these characters could experience these events and would react with such dramatic flair. Much of the film’s success hinges on the chemistry between the incomparable Cary Grant and Rosaline Russell, who continuously blur the line between genuine affection and genuine distaste for each other in a way that subtly delivers backstory without taking anything away from the film’s current action. As a romantic comedy about getting the girl back with surprising respect for its female lead, the film has a strikingly modern sensibility to it despite all of the elements that firmly root it in the 1930s, and it deserves its place as a classic of the comedy canon.
