Feel good movie submitted by klickitat on August 25, 2012, 1:32pm Excellent cast, including Mary-Louise Parker in one of her first big roles. Recommended for people looking for a movie about female friendship or a period piece.

Great movie on friendship submitted by ValerieL on August 26, 2012, 11:33am I absolutely love this movie. It's a wonderful movie about life-long friendships through the ups and downs of life and the things you can learn from them and from life experiences. The actresses are terrific and the storyline is easy to follow and loveable even though it bounces back between history and present day.

I highly recommend this to anyone, but particularly women. Watch it with your life-long friends and enjoy!

A wonderful movie! submitted by Jen Chapin-Smith on August 29, 2012, 12:13pm Based on the Fannie Flagg novel, "Fried Green Tomatoes" is one of my favorite movies. It follows the friendships of two sets of women, one in the Depression and one in 1980s. It has some real funny parts, such as when Evelyn intentionally runs her car into another's and then tells the other driver, "Face it: I'm older and I have more insurance."

My main criticism is that, unlike the book, it is hard to tell in the movie that Ruth and Idgie are a couple. The film also accurately portrays the racism and sexism of the era. Ruth and Idgie segregate seating at their cafe, although the African American patrons (oddly) don't seem to mind in the movie. The movie also does not portray nearly the racial politics that the book does. For example, in the movie Idgie suggests what to do with the corpse, but in the book, Big George does and his employers never know anything about it. The book is better, so be sure to read it.

The movie contains a fair amount of violence, including the KKK attacking African Americans and Ruth's husband beating her.

Love the story submitted by Aimless on July 19, 2019, 6:43pm It is a queer love story, although the relationship between idgie and Ruth is portrayed in the movie as good friends...the book is a queer love story.

One of the best movies of that year submitted by crp on August 28, 2019, 9:35pm One of the best movies of that year

One of the best movies of all time submitted by clk.9123 on August 22, 2022, 7:37pm I first watched this as a child, and 20+ years later, it still holds space in my brain because it is THAT good. Over time, I’ve noticed more nuance to this and love to watch it every few years. This movie is far more than entertainment and truly explores female friendship throughout decades and age differences with a range of other experiences taking place. It is wonderful.
