Uninspired, Repetitive, and Uninformative submitted by Meginator on August 5, 2020, 5:22pm I picked this up hoping to find some recommendations for an upcoming trip to Florida, or at least some stimulating visuals, and found instead a strange, unfocused program that borders on the bizarre. The film has a strangely voyeuristic tone, from the focus on extreme concentrations of wealth in communities like Palm Beach and Naples to the close-up views of unsuspecting beachgoers in swimwear and couples kissing in the water. Rather than focusing on potential tourist destinations, the film repeats a few platitudes about Florida’s universally excellent weather (yep, they definitely ignore the frequent thunderstorms and hurricane season) and shows footage of storefronts, homes, and yachts well beyond the financial reach of its apparent intended audience while crowing about how rich everyone is. The subject matter is questionable, and so is the cinematography, which relies on repetition that is not only unnecessary (it’s not like Florida lacks for beautiful scenery) but also confusing, as the same storefronts and mansions pop up during narration about Palm Beach and Naples. Quick-fire shots are disorienting and uninformative, and the film inexplicably cuts to small frames at seemingly random times. Somehow, I did catch the names of a couple of nature preserves that I’ll follow up on, but I can’t in good faith recommend this, even as a brief introduction to the region.
