"Finely wrought and inventive, Captain Fantastic surely earns the lofty praise of its title."--Guardian.
"'Captain Fantastic' should connect in a major way with those looking to be swept up and moved by such a fundamental human experience."--Variety.
"Gorgeously photographed, and as loosey-goosey as its hero, 'Captain Fantastic' takes some unexpected turns."--New York Daily News.
Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, isolated from society, a devoted father dedicates his life to transforming his six young children into extraordinary adults. But when a tragedy strikes the family, they are forced to leave this self-created paradise and begin a journey into the outside world that challenges his idea of what it means to be a parent and brings into question everything he's taught them.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Family OFF the 'Grid" submitted by LVDS on March 4, 2017, 11:57am I recently enjoyed this film on a plane. Very unusual "home-schooling" but loving awesome family ties & values, rejecting the "normal" traditions.
Quirky, funny, smart & sensitive!!!!
Worth your watch.

Un-watchable submitted by HST on June 7, 2017, 8:19am Excessive use of the F*** word. Troubling messaging. It's OK to steal from grocery stores? Don't make fun of anyone except Christians? etc. I fail to see the humor.

Non-traditional family submitted by ferielp on July 13, 2017, 3:13pm The juxtaposition between them and their cousins who attend public school, buy packaged food and shop for entertainment is a good reminder of the lack of engagement we have with the lives we're living. These kids are socially conscious, inquisitive and active, their father doesn't sugarcoat his answers to their many questions, and that builds a deeper trust in the value of facts as opposed to pretty half-truths.

OK submitted by yenkong on July 18, 2017, 7:37pm I think it's an ok movie but definitely not family friendly.

c submitted by kscapellie on July 11, 2020, 5:42pm no humor

Older Family Friendly submitted by Sockethair on December 17, 2020, 7:29pm I definitely feel that this movie can be very family friendly, as long as your kids are old enough to understand/can laugh at the use of the F#$% word and take this movie as the awesome commentary on capitalism vs extreme offgrid-ism that it is. Probably not great for kids under 12 or 14 but really funny and well made. Great critique of capitalism and a good opportunity to chat about what's wrong with our society--and maybe what's ok after all.

Underrated submitted by rsalles on July 21, 2023, 2:34pm I thought this was a great movie, and entirely unique. Would i watch with my young kids? No, but definitely with my high school aged ones.
Deals with many pertinent themes including death and grief.
