COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Interesting, up to a point. Did not have the discipline to see all of its randomly put together scenes. submitted by Tassos on January 21, 2019, 10:44am I know Almodovar is supposed to be a big cheese as directors go, but he can't hold a candle to Bergman or Hitchcock or even Woody Allen. Some interesting scenes and that's all. Really not a big deal, this incoherent hodge-podge.

This movie wants you to feel empathy for a rapist... I’m not kidding. submitted by rebekam on August 18, 2019, 12:15pm Almodovar attempts to make a moral argument in the case of a male nurse raping and impregnating a comatose patient under his care. The director attempts to make the viewer feel empathy towards the nurse who was under the delusion that he was in a relationship with this patient and therefore it’s okay that he raped someone who could in no way give consent. This movie is infuriating. Especially when looking back, there seemed to be no public outcry on the premise of the movie. In fact, it garnered high praise. I’m astonished to learn that this won the best original screenplay Oscar in 2002, the Golden Globe for best foreign film, and many positive reviews from prominent publications such as NYT, Time, and Peter Travers of Rolling Stone. Law and Order: SVU debuted in 1999 and covered the subject of rape extensively; the kind of sex crime depicted in “Talk to Her” would have been portrayed in a very different light. Even in terms of it being from 2002, this kind of portrayal and storytelling is unacceptable, and yet it was lauded by the overwhelmingly white male media and entertainment institutions. I’m not sure why Almodovar decided to ham handedly tackle the subject of rape and try to challenge and soften viewers perceptions over a subject that is hideously criminal. The synopsis does not mention anything about rape, in fact it refers to the nurse and his victim as a “couple.” Disgusting.
