This show remains utterly compelling in its fourth season, so much so that I can barely imagine trying to watch it week by week instead of in giant binge-watching gulps. This particular season has a lot of complementary storylines that weave in and out of each other, which can make some of the middle episodes a little difficult to follow, but everything falls neatly into place by the end. The final two scenes are particularly poignant, simultaneously putting a fine point on the end of this season and promising more to come from these fascinating characters in season five. What started out like a simple procedural cop show has become so much more due to the characters’ emotional depth and the writers’ ability to juggle multiple storylines and points of view in nuanced ways that feel almost alien in big-budget productions these days.
