COMMUNITY REVIEWS

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre submitted by leighsprauer on August 15, 2022, 1:03pm Humphrey Bogart is Dobbs, a down on his luck American living in Mexico, who teams up with two others to pan for gold in the Sierra Madre range. The oldest of the trio warns them that greed changes people, or perhaps just magnifies the vice or virtue that's already there. Though at first the other two are skeptical, his predictions turn out to be true. It's a cautionary tale about greed, wealth, and ultimately happiness that is just as relevant as it was in 1947.

This was an entertaining movie; the acting is good, if overdone at times. The plot is sort of ridiculous and unbelievable, but the moral doesn't hinge on that, so it's easy to overlook. There are some loose ends (why was the man in the white suit given so much attention, and then never seen again?), and some ends that were dramatically and abruptly cut short. And one part that sits uneasily with me, although I can't tell if it's a feature or a bug: there seems to be no foreshadowing about what sort of man the two younger are, and whether they will succumb to the greed or rise above it. The more that I think about it, the more I think it must have been intentional: to show that the seeds of depravity are in all of us, as well as the seeds of selflessness and generosity, and that it might take a life-changing event, such as sudden wealth, to see which of those seeds will take over. Or, as is more often the case, how those end up co-existing within us.
