COMMUNITY REVIEWS

Most of it is good submitted by pkooger on February 9, 2010, 2:00pm Ouch, for the blatant racism. Apart from the scenes where Mickey Rooney plays a Japanese racist caricature, this was actually a pretty good movie. I really enjoyed the party scene.

What We Can Forgive submitted by Caser on February 10, 2010, 1:34pm In response to pkooger's review, I agree that there are certain elements of late 1950s - early 1960s film making that we can forgive or overlook if the story is still great, the acting superb, or the writing as sharp and effective as when it was released. I'm not saying Breakfast at Tiffany's has all of these things -- in fact the writing falls down in a few places -- but I'll still watch it to follow Audrey Hepburn around the sentimental NYC invented in this film, and I'll still laugh at the party socialites and their inane banter. The fictional NYC in this movie is probably the reason I still want to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the New Year's Eve ball drop. The city seems magical. So I still love seeing Audrey sing Moon River on the fire escape even if it isn't her singing. She's simply mesmerizing in this film.

But Rooney's portrayal of the Chinese landlord is unforgivable. This film is not a commentary on immigration, on racism, or on ownership in a city. And Rooney is not being funny (even though he must be trying). This is a comedy-drama that serves best as a vehicle for Audrey Hepburn to be as glamorous and as intriguing as she has ever been on screen.

Amazing Audrey! submitted by lola13 on July 15, 2011, 11:39am I adored this movie. It was so great, Audrey totally nailed the part of Holly Golightly! An awesome movie to watch again, and again!

Mostly Great submitted by Commander Taffy on July 28, 2012, 7:08pm I really enjoyed the movie, which was quite fun, but their were a few things I did not like. All the smoking and drinking made the movie less enjoyable, and as people have previously mentioned the movie was very racist at points. It is worth while to watch however despite these points.

Classic submitted by pvogiatz on August 2, 2015, 11:15pm It's really a great film!!!!

Buck toothed and fancy free! submitted by willow on August 28, 2015, 4:25pm Mickey Rooney plays the bumbling and deliberately hideous "Mr. Yunioshi," complete with ghastly faux-accent. The NYTimes said, "Mickey Rooney's bucktoothed, myopic Japanese is broadly exotic" in 1961. Very broadly exotic. Maybe, just gross.

BaT submitted by tbbrown76 on August 14, 2017, 4:38pm Classic. Not that great. But, I still love it. Even 50 years later.

classic submitted by crp on August 22, 2019, 1:13am classic but does rely on racist tropes and stereotypes

Breakfast at Tiffany's submitted by lstorc on August 28, 2019, 11:04pm Breakfast at Tiffany's is charming, but equally overdramatic.

d submitted by kscapellie on July 11, 2020, 4:19pm adored this movie
