Well, I learned a bit of old drug slang, anyway. submitted by lisa on June 10, 2023, 7:21pm This film was recently featured in the "Summer Camp" line-up on Turner Classic Movies, a feature of films with campy content. I can see how it has been appreciated for its over-the-top content, with the melodrama played to the hilt, and an extreme maudlin plot. Unlike the lurid novel, it has a sort of happy ending, at least for one character. But the big piece for me was learning that the "dolls" of the title aren't the characters in it but the drugs they take.
