great series submitted by camelsamba on August 12, 2018, 11:28pm After Tony Hillerman died, his daughter Anne took up the pen and built on his characters while taking them in new directions. It had been a long time since I’d read any Hillerman and I doubt I read all of them, so I don’t know how or when Bernie (short for Bernadette) Manuelito was introduced. Anne gives her much more of a starring role in the series, although her husband Jim Chee is still important and Joe Leaphorn (the original Hillerman detective) is consulted here and there.

This is the third mystery in the series by Anne Hillerman, and has a police procedural slant. Bernie is a strong female lead. Family is a strong component, as is the Navajo culture. Because I grew up in New Mexico, I get a little bit homesick reading about the landscapes. The narrator of the audiobooks is wonderful. One of the advantages of listening to this series as audiobooks is that you don't have to wonder how to pronounce the Navajo words - it's done for you!
