A must read submitted by mickplu on August 5, 2017, 8:55pm Based on a historical period of time in Maine 1947, when fires broke out in several cities, this work of fiction deals with the aftermath of the fire on one family. The wife is suddenly left homeless with two children under the age of three, her mother, and a husband who disappeared trying to fight the fire. Grace is forced to become more independent, learning to drive, takes a job, falls in love, etc. and then several months later her husband returns severely burnt, missing an eye, paralysis of limbs, etc. What interested me most about the plot, is the villain (the husband) is totally believable as far as his controlling nature and emotional abuse. The ending is sublime and for the most part, all ends are tied up and resolved for the main characters.
