After Tomi falls ill she and Sukichi return home, while the children, grief-stricken, hasten to be with her.

COMMUNITY REVIEWS
Master Strokes submitted by whoisdonald on June 16, 2014, 8:08pm Ozu strikes clean notes throughout this film, which on the surface seems simple and bittersweet, yet delivers a strong critique and commentary on generational issues of Japan in the 1950s.
The most Ozu-esque Ozu

I respect this film's deserved, epic reputation. But if you've never seen ANY film by Ozu, the length and melodrama of this one may make it a challenging place to start. His 1959 'Floating Weeds' is a bit more accessible, and my personal fave is 'Early Spring' —which as a bonus has an Ozu tribute feature by Wim Wenders which is a beautiful film in its own right.
Also if you already love 'Tokyo Story' but don't know Leo McCarey’s film 'Make Way for Tomorrow' please check it out.
